Welcome to the Lafayette Society's web page

The Lafayette Society promotes awareness of the many contributions to America’s freedom by the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolutionary War. We honor his exemplary leadership skills and his spirit of patriotism by encouraging these traits in the civic character of Fayetteville, North Carolina, the first city in the United States named for him.

Membership is open to all. We invite you to join us!

35th annual meeting and banquet of the Lafayette Society

The Lafayette Society of Fayetteville, North Carolina, is pleased to announce that Alan R. Hoffman will present “Boston’s Role as Revolutionary Vanguard and Lafayette’s Return” at the 35th annual meeting and banquet of the Lafayette Society at 1 p.m. on Sunday March 6, 2016 at the Ramada Plaza (the former Holiday Inn Bordeaux). Mr. Hoffman is president of the American Friends of Lafayette and translated Auguste Levasseur’s Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825 into English.

In the American Revolutionary War, Lafayette - a young French nobleman - fought alongside George Washington, commanded the Army of Virginia as a Major General, influenced French King Louis XVI to enter the war on America’s side, and helped force the surrender of British forces under General Cornwallis at Yorktown. Throughout the rest of his life, Lafayette remained a steadfast friend of America and an outspoken advocate for freedom and equality for all, including women and those in slavery. In 1824-25, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to tour the United States as “the Nation’s Guest.” That tour was chronicled by Auguste Levasseur, Lafayette’s private secretary and a military man himself. Lafayette en Amérique en 1824 et 1825 shows the universal adoration for Lafayette in the United States as he travelled through all 24 states and the friendships he enjoyed with Monroe, Madison, Jefferson, and Adams. It also provides a panoramic view of a growing country and its civic and industrial advances only 50 years after its founding.

Levasseur’s account of the tour was published in French in 1829 and portions were subsequently translated into English. However, the first complete translation was completed by Mr. Hoffman in 2006, just in time for the celebration of Lafayette’s 250th birthday. Alan obtained his BA in history from Yale College, and his JD from Harvard Law School. He has practiced law in Boston for 40 years. He is president of two organizations: the Massachusetts Lafayette Society, and the American Friends of Lafayette, a national organization dedicated to the memory of the Marquis de Lafayette and the study of his life and times in America and France. He has lectured in 20 of the 24 states visited by Lafayette and his book is in its third printing. (For more information about Mr. Hoffman or his books please visit www.lafayetteinamerica.com.)
