Author David Clary will discuss his book, Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship That Saved the Revolution, published in January by Bantam. This event, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is part of Fayetteville’s celebration of Marquis de Lafayette’s 250th birthday in 2007. For more information, call 483-7727 ext. 210

Clary, former chief historian of the U.S. Forest Service, is the author of numerous books and other publications on military and scientific history.

Airborne & Special Operations Museum Reception

The public is invited to enjoy a travelogue presented by a contingent of visitors from Fayetteville’s sister city, St. Avold, France, followed by a light reception. The museum’s gallery will remain open.

The Sons of the American Revolution will have a grave-marking for Patriot Isham Blake, Lafayette’s bodyguard at Yorktown.

Memorial Day, May 28- HONORING OUR MILITARY HERITAGE & HEROES

The Fayetteville Downtown Alliance will host the 7th annual Glory Days event on Monday, May 28.  This year’s theme is “The Revolutionary War.” Glory Days, an official event of the Lafayette 250 Celebration, is a family-oriented, fun-filled, day-long celebration that includes:

■ 7 am-noon: Pancake Breakfast in the Metropolitan Room on Green Street, sponsored by
local Kiwanis International Clubs.

■ 8 am-5 pm: NC State Criterium Championship (aka “NASCAR on Bicycles”) on Hay Street, sponsored by Cross Creek Cycling Club.

■ 8 am-10 am: Apple Pie Contest entries in the Metropolitan Room, sponsored by Armed Forcez Wingz. 

■ 9 am-3 pm: Classic Car Cruise-in at the Festival Park Promenade, sponsored by Cape Fear Classics Car and Truck Club.

■ 10 am-3 pm: Revolutionary War Exhibit at the Market House, sponsored by the City of Fayetteville.

■ Book Signing of “A DOCTOR LOOKS AT WAR: My Year in Iraq” by author Michael C. Hodges, M.D., at City Center Gallery & Books.

■ 11 am: Formal Memorial Day ceremony at Freedom Memorial Park.
 
■ Noon: Wreath-laying ceremony at the Lafayette Statue in Cross Creek Park, sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution.

■ 1:00pm: Winners of the apple pie contest announced.

■ 1:05pm: Raffle drawing and bidding on winning apple pies and auction items will take place in the Metropolitan Room, all to benefit troops and families. (100% of proceeds from the apple pie contest and auction will support our troops and their families through Armed Forcez Wingz, Inc.)

■ 10 am-5 pm: Live Music on stage at The Metropolitan Room.
 
■ 10 am-5 pm: Kids Korner, sponsored by Swampdogs Baseball, will be on Green Street. Get team autographs and meet mascots “Slider” and “Fungo”!
 
■ 10 am-5 pm: Carriage Rides, All-American Hot dogs, Homemade Apple Pie, Arts, Crafts, and food vendors galore!

■ 3 pm: Patriotic Art Poster Contest Winners, sponsored by Cumberland County Schools and Lafayette 250.
