paperweight_tnMade of heavy-duty glass, this handsome paperweight commemorates the Revolutionary War hero from France and the very first town or city in the United States to be named after him. 1783 indicates the year that the North Carolina general assembly named the merged towns of Campbellton and Cross Creek in honor of Lafayette. 1825 was the year in which Lafayette visited Fayetteville, NC. In spite of the many places named in his honor by then, Fayetteville was the only namesake town or city that Lafayette actually visited.

The following stores carry the Lafayette paperweight:

  • The Pilgrim in Westwood Shopping Center – 910-867-9750

History of marquis de Lafayette

The marquis de Lafayette was a French nobleman who, at the age of 19, defied his king by sailing to America in 1777 to fight in the Revolutionary War against England. His bravery and leadership in the field, his loyalty to General George Washington, his generosity in spending most of his personal wealth on the American cause, and his success in persuading the French king to send soldiers and money were decisive factors in America’s victory.
